While working at Arts University Bournemouth, for the MIS department, I tried several new pieces of software to help us see patterns in students’ behaviour. Our objective was for departments in the university to be proactive in giving support and advice to students before they ran into any trouble or complications with their degree and/or student life.

This was about 10 years ago, when Artificial Intelligence (AI) was still taking its first steps, but we could see then the potential that these technologies could bring to the institution. What once seemed like an idea from science fiction is now is a reality. In fact, some AI software is now capable of evaluating the initial state of a student and then making projections of their evolution, along with the probability of a student abandoning their studies by a certain time.

AI uses fields such as Machine Learning, Deep Learning and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to enable algorithms to learn by themselves. That is, they can process, automate, and organise a large amount of data to execute an action and obtain a specific result.

Using these innovations in your institutions can bring multiple advantages, like using CELCAT technologies for timetabling to give your students a better experience with schedules. And in that sense, technology is your best ally in adding value for your students, improving your Educational Marketing actions, and keeping your institution at the forefront.

AI can help with:

Facilitating teaching

Currently, teachers' time becomes increasingly scarce due to the increase in repetitive tasks, such as grading tests or reviewing homework. AI can reduce repetitive tasks for teachers, and stimulate personalised training, whilst giving more importance to collaborative learning.

One of the main advantages of implementing AI in education is the creation of algorithms that grade questionnaires, leaving teachers more time to investigate, create new teaching methodologies and individually attending to their students.

Monitor student performance

The algorithms of educational platforms can identify patterns in the behaviour of students. As I mentioned at the beginning, we analyse the frequency with which the students access counselling services to interpret if a student is having difficulties in their educational training.

With the processing of this data, you will be able to obtain the necessary information to establish trends in performance. This will allow you to implement corrective actions, to design better teaching methodologies, or create curricula, which will favour more efficient learning.

Simplify educational management

Carrying out the administrative tasks of your educational institution consumes many resources that AI can do faster, better and at a lower cost. Some of the actions that can be entrusted to AI are:

Delegating administrative coordination

Supporting complex decisions with predictive analytics

Aid in the design of better educational programs

Answer administrative questions through chatbots

Assign everyday tasks, such as following up and suggesting schedules

In conclusion

The use of Artificial Intelligence in education constitutes an unprecedented opportunity for the education sector to adapt to new technological trends.

At CELCAT, we believe in moving along with the times and we are always looking for opportunities to use and embrace new technologies that, ultimately, will help you, as a member of staff, as well as the students at your university or institution.

Is your institution already using, or getting ready to use, AI?
