Q. How do I install Timetabler 6?

A. Follow the instructions in the Installation Guide or request consultancy from our Support Services.

back

Q. How do I resolve DCOM errors?

A. Timetabler 6 uses DCOM (Microsoft's Distributed Component Object Model) for communications between Timetabler Client and Timetabler Server. The Installation Guide provides detailed instructions on configuring the DCOM security mechanism. These instructions must be followed closely to succesfully implement the software in a networked enviornment.

Q. Should I use MSDE 2000 or MS SQL Server 2000?

A. Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) is the free, redistributable version of SQL Server (and it is shipped with Timetabler 6). MSDE contains a workload governor designed to limit performance if the database engine receives more work than is typical of a small number of users. Installation of MSDE or SQLServer depends on your anticipated use of Timetabler. MSDE 2000 is sufficient for single-user operation or in a small department where concurrent access to the timetable data is likely to be limited to 3 or 4 users. However, in larger implementations use SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition or SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition.

back

Q. How should I backup my timetables?

A. Use the Backup facility in Timetabler Administrator (Timetables | Timetable Utilities menu), or ensure that the database is included in regular backups performed by your IT department.

back

Q. Can I use multiple copies of Timetabler Server?

A. Although it is normal to have a single Timetabler Server, you can install and configure as many copies as you wish. If you have a very large number of users or have users spread across remote sites it can be beneficial to install multiple copies of Timetabler Server, e.g. to have one instance for web users; another for users on a remote campus, etc

back

Q. What is the difference between a timetable name and the database name?

A. The database name refers to the name of the physical data that the database server uses. This is what the database server sees.

The timetable name is a piece of text that you choose that will most likely help you identify that timetable, such as “Timetable 2004-2005”. This is stored in the database. This is what you see, and is more useful to you in everyday use of CELCAT Timetabler.

back

Q. Does destroying a database in CELCAT Timetabler Administrator actually destroy the database, or does it merely stop me seeing it?

A. Choosing to destroy a timetable in CELCAT Timetabler Administrator will remove the database and its contents, completely destroying it. This is different from CELCAT v5.6, which merely stopped you seeing it from within CELCAT. You can use the "Unregister" command in Administrator if you simply want to remove a timetable from the list.

back

Q. Does Verify Timetable fix my database? Can it retrieve data for me?

A. The 'Verify Timetable' routine looks at the underlying data structure of the database to see if there are any inconsistencies. If there are any errors, it may be able to fix them for you. If no fix is available it is usually best to create a new timetable and export your data to the new one. We recommend backing up regularly in order to prevent loss of important data.

Q. I have backed up a database within CELCAT Timetabler Client, but do not seem to be able to restore it. How do I do this?

A. To restore a database, use the CELCAT Timetabler Administrator application. The Restore operation can be found under Timetables | Timetable Utilities | Restore Timetable. In order to restore the timetable that you are currently logged into, you will need Exclusive Access.

back

Q. How do I get exclusive access to a timetable?

A. Use CELCAT Timetabler Administrator to make exclusive access requests. Log into a timetable and use either the Timetables | Immediate Exclusive Access command to gain immediate exclusive access, or if someone else is logged on, schedule some future time to gain exclusive access.

back

Q. What are the tag fields for?

A. The tag fields are free text fields that can be used as a filter when printing reports. They can also be used in Advisers in order to limit the search results.

back

Q. What is the CTTServer shown in the left hand treeview in CELCAT Timetabler Administrator?

A. This is the name given to the CELCAT Timetabler Server instance.

back

Q. What is the difference between the CTTServer and the SQL Server?

A. The SQL Server stores your timetable databases. The CTTServer is the program that talks to the SQL Server. The client interfaces (Timetabler Client, Timetabler Administrator, Timetabler Web Server, etc) communicate with the CTTServer.

back

Q. When trying to open my timetable I get the message 'Wrong database version found (26). Version 41 required. What should I do?

A. Upgrade the timetable database using Timetabler Administrator

back

Q. How do I upgrade my timetable database?

A. Use Timetabler Administrator. Right-click the timetable and select the Upgrade command.

back

Q. How do I copy my timetable?

A. To create a copy on the same database server, use the Timetabler Client | Tools | Timetable Utilities | Copy command. If you want to copy it to another database server use MS Enterprise Manager, Data Transfer Services.

back

Q. How do I upgrade to the latest available build?

A. Download from www.celcat.com and install all of the components that you use. You must ensure that all components are of the same build. Make sure that all users are logged out of the timetable before upgrading. Install over the existing installation.

back

Q. How do I upgrade from v5.x?

A. Create a new timetable in Timetabler 6 and configure it in exactly the same way as your v5 timetable (i.e. same dates, weeks, period times). Run a Reindex and Verify operation before using the Tools | Timetable Utilities | Import | v5 command to import. 'CC5 Code to Unique Name' is the default option, keep this option if you use 'v5.6 Codes' (remember that you cannot have duplicates).

back

Q. Why are some of my resources a 'red' colour in the Event Window? What does this mean?

A. This means they are allocated to the event in only some of its weeks. Hover the mouse over the resource name to reveal the weeks in which the resource is assigned.

back

Q. What is an 'Origin'?

A. When importing data, Timetabler can store details of where the data originated. These Origin records are useful when differentiating between data in multiple import operations.

back

Q. What is the default username/password to log into a timetable?

A. Please contact technical support.

back

Q. How do I run CELCAT Web Server securely?

A. To run web server securely you need to create a root.pem, key.pem, cert.pem and copy them to the web server folder, the default path is c:\program files\CELCAT\Timetabler\WebServer. If you need help creating these files you can use SSL Buddy which is available from here. You will need to select "Prepare an SSL certificate for installation in an Indy/IntraWeb server" and then follow the onscreen instructions. Once you've done this you will have a cert.pem and key.pem. You will then need to run the utility again but select "Extract a Trusted Root Certificate for installation into a web server." Once all 3 files have been copied to the web server folder you will then see then have the option to run web server securely.

back

Q. How do I access Room Booker?

A. To access Room Booker you will need to ensure that CELCAT Web Server is configured and then you can use the url of for example http://celcatserver:8080/roombooker
