Entrance

The Norman Keep (right) and Leicester's Building (left) as seen from the castle entrance.

Leicester's Building

Added in the 16th century by Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester to provide better accommodation for important visitors.

A view looking up inside one of the towers.

Tudor Garden

Views of the Tudor garden taken from the Norman Keep.

The garden was reconstructed in 1970 following 17th century plans.

Cottages in Castle Green can be seen in the distance.

This shot taken from the broken defences of the Keep.

Stables

Built against the castle wall, the Tudor Stables now house an historical exhibition. The ruined foundations of St Mary's Chapel are in the foreground.

From the Mere

The mere on an overcast day.

The Keep

Also known as Caesar's Tower. If you visit, look for the holes at the top of the eastern wing where a clock with blue dial and gold numbers was once located.

During Queen Elizabeth's visit in 1575 the clock was stopped at 2 o'clock to indicate that time would stand still during her stay.

Ticket Office

Money well spent :)

Gatehouse

The entrance to Robert Dudley's Gatehouse. His initials appear either side of the door.

Dudley's Elizabethan Gatehouse. Scaffolding has finally been removed (Spring 2000) following structural repair by English Heritage since 1993.

Tiltyard

A view from Brays car park as you head for the castle entrance across the Causeway and Tiltyard.

The Brays was an enclosed area used to host medieval contests. Now used as a car park. The Tiltyard is the thin strip of land at the top of the causeway and was used in jousting. Walking across the Tiltyard toward the castle entrance, you're pacing the ground where knights in shining armour once battled!

The Great Mere

A view of the castle from the site of the Great Mere.

At one time a large lake surrounded the fortress providing excellent defences. The Mere was also used by the Elizabethans in pageantry.

A view from the castle.

Events

Chary-looking characters from a theatrical production of Alice...

These events are generally fun and not to be taken too seriously.

Historical (or perhaps fictional) re-enactment.

The Ford

The Ford in flood, Easter 1998.

The road by the castle regularly floods after heavy rain.

Castle Welcome

"Welcome to Kenilworth Castle". Sign at entrance.

Great Hall

One of the windows in the Great Hall. The hall had the largest span of any timber hammer-beamed roof in England. The slots either side of the windows show where the original timbers were located.
